The Kenworthy family had lived at Henholmes Farm since at least 1774. Joseph and his two brothers were born in Manchester and Eccles, where their father, Benjamin, had moved to find work. After Benjamin's death in 1865, the family returned to Deepcar and relied on parish relief. Several members of the Kenworthy family are buried in the cemetery at St. Mary's Church in Bolsterstone.
